"The Whitaker's Library: Part 1" by Lorex Games //Day 7

You know exactly what you're getting with The Whitaker's Library: Part 1

Today's game was a very classic take on PSX horror. When you think of those words, you will think of a game like Whitaker's Library, and that, for me, is perfect. We are thrown into a spooky library with a red, monochromatic shader, complete with PSX-style effects like grain and crunched rasterization. Complete with jump-scares, creepy bobblehead-textured PS1 characters, and, of course, a monster peeking at us from around corners, you are getting exactly what you would want out of an indie horror game and nothing more.

The main gameplay loop is that you are tasked with grabbing books from the library shelves and packing them into a box, all while moving at a snail's pace. The loop is shaken up and broken up by random scene switches to different horror settings, like the scene of a murder, a pentagram, and a suicide. The jump-scares sprinkled throughout are pretty good, especially the one that activates upon failing a task when the monster catches you. My favorite part of the gameplay was definitely when you get the gun because it's a fun reaction time test and actually requires you to lock in.

The story is pretty basic, and there's not much to say about it: a man who owns a library has a dark past, and you uncover that past while working for him. The only thing of note in the story was the ending cutscene that used an AI voice for the woman. I would've personally preferred an actual voice actress or even just text, but whatever.
