"Bad Parenting 1: Mr. Red Face" by 2OO2 //Day 4

Bad Parenting 1: Mr Red Face is an extremely dark and disturbing videogame.

A stylish PSX game that ditches interpolated animations to achieve puppet-like movement, combined with creative models and a good overlay filter, makes this game extremely fun to look at and explore, even though the environment feels small and cramped. The game takes you to very few locations, but what it lacks in space, it more than makes up for in both plot and graphics.

The plot of this game is graphic, unsubtle, and probably deserves a trigger warning, so here it is. Trigger warning. Spoiler warning, too. I’ve never played an indie horror game that strips away all subtlety and actually shows child death—and probably for good reason, because wow that was graphic. The cheap jump scares that precede it could honestly have been ditched, given how shocking the nature of the plot already is, and probably should have been removed for that reason. The story is well-told for a game like this, featuring more than a few twists.

I really can’t bring myself to recommend this game, but if you aren’t too bothered by the themes it touches on and think it sounds fun, then go ahead. I had a pretty good time with my playthrough and was genuinely shocked by some of the scenes and reveals. I had a lot of fun playing through 2OO2's first release.
