Coining a name for the genre of Night Reception
Picture this: you're at work, doing your job, probably alone and at night. Then, as your shift progresses, something scary happens. If this sounds familiar, then you have probably either played or watched others play a good amount of PSX horror games because this is a common theme in many of the good ones. Chilla Art's The Closing Shift, Vivi's Kiosk, and Puppet Combo's Stay Out of the House are all great examples and fit perfectly into this genre. It's really fun and fits the PSX style well, which is why I think it's so popular. I think we should call this sub-genre "Blue Collar Horror."
Night Reception takes a similar approach, placing you in the role of a motel receptionist, checking in guests and guiding each one to their rooms. I really liked the environment. The reception house looked great, and so did the motel with all its different rooms; the playground was a nice touch as well. The escort mechanic was surprisingly solid, and the other events, like the food delivery and cleaning, were well done too. The only mechanical issue I had with the game was that sometimes skipping through the dialogue was buggy, but you get used to it.
The atmosphere is pretty creepy. Working the night shift in a motel has to be one of the eeriest jobs I can imagine, and they executed it well with the environment mentioned earlier. The jump-scares aren't over-the-top or too frequent; I think they're just right. Adding more events like cleaning would help break up the monotony, but it's not bad as it is. Overall, it's a really solid game with enjoyable gameplay and good scares.
